Sea Dogs rally just short, fall 4-3 in Akron

(Akron, Ohio) - The Akron Aeros (31-31) made it five consecutive wins with a 4-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (31-28) on Saturday night at Canal Park. Portland has dropped four of five this month and falls a season-high 4.5 games out of first place.

Jordan Cooper (2-2) tossed six scoreless frames on three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win. Cooper's only hit allowed was a single by Shannon Wilkerson to start the game.

Matt Barnes (3-3) took his second straight loss, giving up five hits and four runs over 4 IP. Barnes fanned eight and walked one.

Jose Flores retired all four batters to earn his sixth save of the season. Flores struck out the side in the ninth.

Akron scored twice in their first turn against Barnes. Carlos Moncrief knocked in two with a two-out single. In the third, the Aeros extended their lead to 4-0 on a two-run double by Jesus Aguilar. Aguilar leads the league with 49 RBI.

Portland loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning against Bryce Stowell but managed one run on a sac-fly by Kolbrin Vitek, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

In the eighth, a two-out rally by Portland brought them within one. Xander Bogaerts started the rally with a single. Michael Almanzar walked and J.C. Linares nailed a two-run double off Bryce Stowell (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO).

Portland's bullpen combined for 4 scoreless frames on five hits and two strikeouts. Jeremy Kehrt and Rafael Perez each worked two innings.

The Sea Dogs and Aeros conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park with a 2:05 first pitch. Righty Keith Couch (3-2, 4.78) makes his first Double-A start and 15th appearance of the season for the 'Dogs. Right-hander Will Roberts (4-2, 3.92) gets the nod for Akron.
