Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- On the strength of a sensational 41-save performance by veteran goaltender Evan Mosher, the P.E.I. Rocket defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs by a score of 6-3 in front of 4,232 fans at Harbour Station on Saturday night. The best-of-seven opening round playoff series between these two divisional adversaries is now tied 1-1.
Zack Phillips, Mike Hoffman, and Nick Petersen scored for Saint John in a losing effort on Saturday, while Jarrad Struthers (2), Benjamin Casavant (2), Louis-Philippe Lacroix, and Jonathan Bonneau each tallied markers for P.E.I.
Between the pipes for the Sea Dogs, overage net minder Marco Cousineau fell to 15-8 in his playoff career after surrendering five goals on 35 shots faced on the evening.
Both goalies played exceptionally well during an intense opening period, combining to make 26 saves in sending the game into intermission number one with the score deadlocked at zeroes.
Rookie winger Zack Phillips broke the scoreless tie 4:56 into the second period, taking a pass from Nicholas Pard deep in Rocket territory and beating Mosher on a low, hard shot to register the first post-season goal of his career. P.E.I. responded ten minutes later, with a net-charging Jarrad Struthers jamming a loose puck across the Saint John goal line during a Rocket power play.
The visitors then took a 3-1 lead late in the middle frame when Benjamin Casavant and Jonathan Bonneau tallied back-to-back even-strength markers.
P.E.I. further added to their lead in the 52nd minute of play, with Jarrad Struthers and Benjamin Casavant finding the back of the net sixteen seconds apart to put the visitors up 5-1.
The Sea Dogs mounted a noble late-match comeback during a lengthy power play, with star forwards Nick Petersen and Mike Hoffman beating Mosher in rapid succession to pull their team to within striking distance of their opponents in the closing moments of regulation. Saint John was unable to further reduce their deficit however, as an empty-net tally off the stick of Louis-Philippe Lacroix sealed the victory for P.E.I.
This series will now relocate to the Charlottetown Civic Centre for Games 3 & 4 (Tuesday & Wednesday, both 7pm starts). Game 5 will be played at Harbour Station next Friday night at 7:30pm. Tickets to this match will go on sale on Monday morning at 10am at the arena box office (506-657-1234, www.tickets.harbourstation.ca).
