Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - General Manager Darrell Young announced today the Saint John Sea Dogs have claimed forward Cole Reginato and defenceman Matt Paul on waivers.
Both players were previously property of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
Reginato, listed at 5'9" and 180 lbs., had two goals and four points in 24 games with Cape Breton this season, his first in the QMJHL. The 18-year-old native of Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia, signed as a free agent with the Screaming Eagles after playing last year with the Yarmouth Mariners of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL).
"We heard great things about Cole last year from Jim Bottomley, his coach in Yarmouth," Young began. "But we didn't have a spot for him at the time. He's a sparkplug. We love his energy and passion. He'll also add toughness with some of our more physical players out of the lineup."
Paul, listed at 6'0" and 172 lbs., has played most of this season with the Amherst Ramblers (MHL), where he had one goal and ten points in 22 games. The 18-year-old, who was raised in Fredericton, had one shot on goal and a -1 rating in two games with Cape Breton this season. He was originally selected by the Screaming Eagles in the sixth-round (93rd overall) of the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft. Paul played 17 games over three seasons with Cape Breton.
"Matt played very well at the Eastern Canada All-Star Challenge Cup in Cornwall," Young said. "I had NHL scouts tell me he could play in our league. He's got good instincts on both sides of the puck, and he's got a New Brunswick background. He'll be a nice fit for us."
Both players are expected to join the Sea Dogs before the weekend.
Young also announced the team released defenceman Austin Clapham.
The 18-year-old from Toronto played 21 games for Saint John after signing as a free agent in September. He posted a -4 rating and eight penalty minutes. The Sea Dogs wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Saint John's next game is Saturday, January 9th, at 7 p.m. against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the KC Irving Regional Centre. Listen LIVE on 96.1 NewSong FM or newsongfm.ca. Watch LIVE on theqmjhl.ca. Also watch LIVE on Rogers TV Community Cable Channel 10.
