Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- Saint John Sea Dogs Director of Hockey Operations Mike Kelly announced today that the team has made a pair of deals with two Quebec-based clubs in advance of the league's Sunday night trade deadline.
The Sea Dogs have acquired overage goaltender Marc-Antoine Gelinas from the Gatineau Olympiques in exchange for conditional 2010 draft pick. Saint John has also dealt 17-year old net minder Simon Giroux to Baie-Comeau in exchange for a second round pick at the 2010 QMJHL Entry Draft.
Gelinas, a native St-Etienne-De-Lauzon, QC, has appeared in 72 games at the major junior level with Gatineau and Prince Edward Island. The 5'11", 185 lb. goalie has amassed a career record of 29-31 to go along with a 3.52 G.A.A. and 0.896 SV%. Originally drafted by Val-d'Or in 2006 (11th Round, 185th Overall), Gelinas has competed in 12 career QMJHL playoff contests for the Rocket and Olympiques, compiling a 5-6 record while registering a SV% of 0.879, and a G.A.A. of 4.07.
The Sea Dogs acquired Simon Giroux midway through the 2008-09 season as part of a multi-player trade with Drummondville. The Laval, QC native was 14-6 with a 2.64 G.A.A. last year with Laval-Bourassa (QCMAAA). Giroux was originally selected by the Voltigeurs in Round Three (37th overall) of the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft.
Defenseman Cody Doiron, meanwhile, has been released from the Sea Dogs' Training Camp Roster effective immediately. The 6'3", 163 lb. blue-liner was a free agent invitee to this year's camp. A native of Caledon, ON, Doiron skated with the Toronto Red Wings (GTHL) and Vaughan Vipers (OJHL) in 2008-09.
Saint John will face Acadie-Bathurst in QMJHL pre-season action later today at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. The puck drops at 4pm as the Sea Dogs look to improve their exhibition record to 2-0 with a road victory over the Titan. Saint John's next home pre-season game is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 29 at 7pm versus the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
