Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY- Three third period goals were the difference as the Halifax Mooseheads spoiled the Screaming Eagles' home opener on Friday night. Rapha?l Lavoie provided the key offense with two goals in the Halifax victory.

After a tentative start to the game, the Screaming Eagles began to take the pressure to the Mooseheads. Special teams would be a story in the first period and throughout the evening. The Eagles would have three power play opportunities in the opening 20 minutes and would cash in to open the scoring after some sustained pressure.

On the second Eagles man advantage Mathias Laferrière dug the puck out of a scrum and and found the empty space between Alexis Gravel's shoulder and the post to open the scoring for the Eagles. Cape Breton outshot Halifax 13-4 in the opening twenty minutes and carried the lead into the intermission.

The 1-0 score would remain in place until 40 seconds past the midway mark of regulation when Lavoie would score from the front of the net to tie the game. It would be the only goal scored at 5 on 5 on the night.

The Eagles would retake the lead on another power play in the second period when Adam McComrick jumped into the play, converted a backhand pass from the net from Egor Sokolov and blasted home a go ahead goal from the top of the faceoff circle. It was a 2-1 scoreline heading into the final frame.

Halifax failed to score on a power play that carried over to the third period, but would have a prolonged opportunity as Declan Smith was whistled for high sticking for four minutes. The Eagles were able to kill off the first three minutes and 49 seconds, but Lavoie would tie the game before power play's end.

With just over five minutes remaining the Moosheads would find a winning goal from Samuel Asselin, also on the power play. Asselin redirected a pass from the top of the faceoff circle past Kevin Mandolese to given Halifax their first lead of the night.

In the final 90 seconds of the game Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would elect to pull Mandolese for an extra attacker. However, the Eagles could generate no sustained pressure and Arnaud Durandeau would hit the empty net to seal the game for Halifax.

Gravel would stop 28 of 30 shots in the victory. Mandolese turned aside 25 of 28 prior to the empty netter in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles continue their home opening weekend with a game against Charlottetown tomorrow night. Puck drop is 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
