Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - Phelix Martineau's second goal of the game late in the second period proved to be the game-winner, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 6-3, Wednesday at Harbour Station.
Massimo Carozza netted a hat trick for Cape Breton (21-15-2-1) while Giovanni Fiore also scored.
Matthew Highmore, Nathan Noel and Joe Veleno responded for Saint John (23-10-3-1), which have lost two straight games.
A scoring summary is available HERE [http://theqmjhl.ca/gamecentre/25329/boxscore].
Highmore opened the scoring eleven minutes into the first period when he deflected home a point shot from Bailey Webster.
Fiore tied the game with under a minute left in the frame, blasting a one-timer from the right circle past Callum Booth for a power play goal.
The Screaming Eagles took their first lead eight minutes into the second period.
Martineau stepped out of the penalty box and took a pass at the Sea Dogs blueline. The veteran centre broke in alone and slipped a shot through Booth's legs.
Carozza made it a 3-1 game 59 seconds later, throwing a pass from the right wing side to the front of the goal where it deflected off a Saint John defenceman and past Booth's right leg for another power play goal.
The Sea Dogs used a power play goal to cut their deficit to one with under eight minutes left in the period.
Noel grabbed the puck on the left wing side of the Cape Breton zone and ripped a quick wrist shot that snuck inside the right post on Screaming Eagles' goalie Kevin Mandolese.
But the visitors restored their two-goal advantage with just over a minute to go in the second when ex-Saint John captain Olivier LeBlanc snapped a quick wrist shot from the blueline that Martineau tipped through the legs of Booth.
Cape Breton led 4-2 after two periods.
Carozza potted a power play goal more than two minutes into third.
The former Quebec Rempart drove the net without the puck and deposited the rebound of a point shot past Booth.
Alex D'Orio relieved Booth after Cape Breton's fifth goal.
Veleno scored his second goal in the last three games while the Sea Dogs enjoyed a two-man advantage eight minutes into the third.
A loose puck came to new Saint John defenceman Simon Bourque at the top of the left circle. He saw Veleno off the right side of the crease. The first overall pick in 2015 fired a short wrist shot into the top of the net to cut Cape Breton's lead to 5-3.
But Carozza completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with two minutes to go.
Mandolese earned the win in goal with 32 saves and an assist. Booth made 19 saves before being relieved in the third period. D'Orio stopped all four shots he faced in relief.
Martineau was named first star with two goals and an assist while LeBlanc grabbed second star with three helpers. Highmore's goal gave him third star in front of 3,308 fans in attendance.
Saint John's next game is Friday, January 6th, at 7 p.m. against Acadie-Bathurst Titan at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office, or fans can save money and buy online [https://www.tickets.harbourstation.ca/Online/default.asp].
