New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Jim Deters struck out a season-high 8 batters in 5.2 innings and Chris Clem had 3 hits and 2 RBIs as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 4-3 Friday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The loss dropped the Cardinals to a game below .500 at 25-26, while Mahoning Valley improved to 26-25. Deters picked up the victory to even his record at 3-3 as the Scrappers swept the three game series. Cards starter Chris Clem (no relation) took the loss to fall to 0-1.

The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Center fielder Sean Danielson led off with an infield hit, stole second and went to third when the throw skipped into center field. He scored on Daniel Nelsons RBI groundout for the games first run.

The Scrappers tied the score in the top of the second. Omar Casillas led off with a walk and scored one out later when Chad Longworth lifted a sacrifice fly to center to even the score at 1-1. Mahoning Valley added three more in the 3rd on 4 hits. Jose Chavez singled to left-center to lead off the inning and Evandy De Leon walked, before Jose Constanza reached on an error by Nelson to load the bases. Clem then walked Matthew Fornasiere to force in a run, and following a pop out, the ScrappersClem lined a two run single to right for a 4-1 lead. But New Jerseys Clem worked out of further damage with the help of Yonathan Sivira who threw out Fornasiere at home for his second outfield assist of the game.

Deeters kept the Cardinals scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when New Jersey cut the lead to 4-3. With two outs, Sivira singled and scored on Carlos De La Cruzs double to left. Pinch hitter Sean Dobson reached on an error to chase Deeters, and reliever Albert Vargas gave up an RBI single to Randy Roth to cut the lead to one.

But the Cardinals could not break through against the Mahoning Valley bullpen, as the tandem of Vargas and Matt Loberg shut out New Jersey to preserve the one-run win. Loberg allowed a walk in the ninth, but earned his 6 save.

The Cardinals start a 5 game road trip on Saturday, August 13 in Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays), with the first of three against the Renegades. They finish the trip with two in Brooklyn against the Cyclones (New York Mets).
