BATAVIA, NY --- The Batavia Muckdogs scored three runs in the second and eighth innings, while six of their eight hits went for extra bases as they defeated the Vermont Expos 6-2 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Dwyer Stadium.

Vermont got on the board first in the top of the second as Dee Brown and Mike Daniel led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with no outs. Brown then scored and Daniel moved to second on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Expos lead, but Vermont was unable to generate anything else in the inning.

That proved costly as the Muckdogs scored three runs on 2 hits off Expos starter Marco Estrada in the bottom of the second. Mike Costanza, who went 9-for-13 with six RBI in the three-game series, led off the inning with a double and, after a walk, scored on a double from Lou Marson to tie the game. Welinson Baez scored on a groundout and Marson an unearned run on a passed ball for a 3-1 Batavia lead.

The Expos next best chance to score came in the third when back-to-back one-out singles from Greg Thissen and Leonard Davis put two runners on. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Dee Brown struckout for the second out. Then after a walk loaded the bases, John Poppert grounded out to third to end the threat.

Vermont did cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth when Brown walked with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single to center from Poppert. But Jamie Lehman, who had pitched a scoreless seventh inning, did not retire any of the four batters he faced in the eighth.

After a leadoff single, Jerremy Slayden smashed a two-run homer to right off Lehman to give the Muckdogs a 5-2 lead. A hit batter and double chased Lehman and reliever Edward Rodriguez allowed a sacrifice fly to Baez to close out the scoring.

Except for the three-run second inning, Estrada (1-3) pitched well as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts over six innings for the loss. Scott Mitchinson (2-6) allowed one run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over six innings for the win, while Ron Hill allowed one run in three innings for his second save.

Vermont (18-33) was held to just two runs for the 11th time this season and is now 0-7 this year in games played on Fridays. The Expos have also lost two of three games or been swept 12 times in 17 three-game series played this season.

The Expos will now play their first non three-game series of the season as they face the Tri-City ValleyCats over the next five days, including the next three at Tri-City before returning home to face the ValleyCats on Tuesday and Wednesday at Centennial Field.
