
Scrappers Fall in Extra Innings

Auburn, NY-Despite coming back to score three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers were unable to pick up back to back come from behind wins. The Auburn Doubledays would plate a run with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning to beat the Scrappers 4-3.
Auburn would jump out to the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Sheldon Neuse would walk to extend the inning. Nick Banks followed with an RBI double to score Neuse for a 1-0 lead.
The Doubledays would add to their lead with another run in the fifth inning. Clayton Brandt started the inning with a double and would move to third on a groundout. Then with two outs Neuse would single to drive Brandt in for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Auburn would get one more on the board. David Kerian doubled to lead off the inning before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Then Blake Perkins appeared to foul a pitch into the backstop, however the home plate umpire would say that it was not a foul and the result was a wild pitch allowing Kerian to score to put the Doubledays up 3-0.
Mahoning Valley would rally to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. With Nate Winfrey and Gabriel Mejia on base with two out, Andrew Calica would single to score Winfrey. Mitch Longo followed, hitting for Jodd Carter who had been ejected in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes, would deliver a two run double to score Mejia and Calica to tie the game 3-3.
Henry Martinez would then come out of the bullpen to twice strand the potential winning run on base in the ninth and tenth innings.
Auburn would end the game however in the bottom of the eleventh. With two outs and Perkins on first, Daniel Johnson would hit a soft single to right that would score Perkins from first for the walk off 4-3 win.
Micah Miniard started and took a no decision in 5.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on six hits. Miniard walked one and struck out two. Ryan Colegate would then go 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits. Colegate did not walk a batter and struck out one. Martinez would go 3.0 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out five without walking a batter. Randy Valladares (0-1) took the loss in 0.2 of an inning of relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits. Valladares struck out one.
The Scrappers (11-20) and Doubledays (15-16) will conclude their season series on Tuesday night in Auburn. Triston McKenzie and his NYPL best 0.28 ERA will get the start for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05. The team returns home on Thursday July 21st to take on the Lowell Spinners. It will be another PNC Thursday Buck Night.
