Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones scored six runs in two innings off of Hudson Valley's bullpen en route to a 6-3 win on a scorching Monday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. All six of the Cyclones runs occurred after two were out, and their rallies began with two out and no one on base.
Each team squandered early scoring opportunities. In the first, Brooklyn got runners to second and third with two out before Hudson Valley starter Adrian Navas got third baseman Blake Tiberi to ground out to the mound to end the inning. Leftfielder Garrett Whitley tripled with one out in the bottom-half, but was stranded when centerfielder Jake Fraley tapped to the mound and third baseman Jim Haley grounded to third.
The Renegades had another chance to score in the fourth. After a two-out balk sent Fraley to second, first baseman Nate Lowe laced a single to right. Fraley tried to score but was gunned down at the plate on a great throw by Gene Cone in right.
Hudson Valley finally took the lead in the fifth. Rightfielder Angel Perez led off with a single, then stole second. He moved to third on a groundout before scoring on a fielder's choice by catcher Danny De La Calle. The ball was hit to third baseman Blake Tiberi who threw late to the plate, allowing Perez to score the first run of the game.
However, the Cyclones would take the lead with four runs in the sixth. With two out and no one on, first baseman Pete Alonso drew a walk then went to third on a double by Tiberi. After that, shortstop Colby Woodmansee ripped a single into left to score both runners and give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Woodmansee scored a hitter later when centerfielder Jacob Zanon laced a single to right. After that, leftfielder Jay Jabs roped a double to left-centerfield to score Zanon and the Cyclones had a 4-1 lead.
They would pick up two insurance runs in the seventh. Again after two were out, designated hitter Ali Sanchez drew a walk. Alonso then stepped to the plate and drilled a two-run homer over the centerfield wall. It was his second homer of the year and gave Brooklyn a 6-1 advantage.
The Renegades tried to make a game of it in the eighth as they put runners at first and second with one out. Whitley dribbled a single to left to score shortstop Joseph Astacio from second and pull the Renegades to within four. Following an out and walk, Hudson Valley had the bases loaded with Lowe coming to the plate as the tying run. However, closer Taylor Henry struck out Lowe on four pitches to retire the side and keep the score 6-2 Brooklyn.
In the ninth, Hudson Valley again threatened. With runners at second and third and none out, De La Calle hit a sac fly to center to bring Hudson Valley to within three. But Henry was able to shut the door by getting flyouts from Astacio and rightfilder Ryan Boldt to end the game.
After Navas fired five scoreless innings to begin the ballgame, the Renegades bullpen was roughed up for six runs on six hits in only two frames. Porter Clayton (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs in the sixth, while Garrett Fulenchek allowed the Alonso homer in the seventh.
The win went to Brooklyn starter Erik Manoah (3-1), who defeated the Renegades for the second time this season. The right-hander allowed a run on four hits in five innings of work.
Hudson Valley outhit Brooklyn 9-8 and received a 2-4 performance from Whitley who tripled and drove in a run. Perez had two singles, a stolen base and two runs scored in four plate appearances, while Lowe went 2-4 with a double.
The Cyclones got a 2-5 outing from Alonso who homered, doubled and drove in two runs. Woodmansee chipped in with a 2-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored.
The Renegades wrap up their series and homestand with the Cyclones on Tuesday with a 7:05 start. Right-hander Eduard Rosillo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will be making his Renegades debut against Cyclones righty Gabriel Llanes (1-3, 3.44 ERA). The game will be followed by a fireworks show.
