Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
NORWICH, CT --- Cole Bauml went 5-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI as the Connecticut Tigers scored eight runs in the second inning to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 13-4 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
After a run in the bottom of first, Connecticut sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning with the first nine reaching safely. Back-to-back singles opened the inning, followed by a fielding error, RBI single, RBI fielding error, RBI single and a Bauml three-run double for a 7-0 lead.
A hit batter and another fielding error reloaded the bases before an RBI forceout and an RBI groundout completed the eight-run frame, the most runs allowed in an inning by Vermont since Aberdeen scored eight runs in the sixth inning on June 23, 2015.
The Tigers scored four more times on five hits in the fifth inning off reliever Ivan Andueza for a 13-0 lead. That gave Connecticut 23 straight runs against the Lake Monsters dating back to Sunday when the Tigers scored the final 10 runs in a 10-3 victory.
Vermont finally snapped the Tigers consecutive run streak with four runs of their own in the ninth inning. Nate Mondou led off with a double to extend his hit streak to nine games and scored on back-to-back Eli White and Miguel Guzman singles. Miguel Mercedes followed with a three-run homer to leftfield for his fifth home run of the season and third hit of the night, while his 24 RBI are now tied for the league lead with Tri-City's Stephen Wrenn.
Lake Monsters starter Heath Bowers (2-4) was charged with the first nine runs (five earned) on six hits over the first 1 1/3 innings to take the loss. It is the first time Vermont has allowed 10 or more runs in two straight games since July 18-19, 2011, while the Lake Monsters team ERA has risen from 2.64 to 3.04 with 17 earned runs allowed in the last two games.
Along with Bauml's five-hit and four-RBI night, Austin Athmann (3-for-5) and Cesar Gonzalez (2-for-5) both had two runs, two RBI and a double for Connecticut (20-11). After starter Kyle Funkhouser tossed three one-hit innnings, reliever Ryan Castellanos (5-2) tossed five scoreless innings before allowing the four runs on four hits in the ninth inning.
Vermont (14-17), which has lost six of its last seven games, will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday night in the series finale at Connecticut starting at 7:05 pm. After an off day on Wednesday, the Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game homestand against Hudson Valley beginning on Thursday.
