Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH- CT - The Connecticut Tigers (20-11) clinched another series win at Dodd Stadium with a 13-0 beat down of the Vermont Lake Monsters, affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The Tigers collected season-highs in runs scored (13) and hits (16) on the night.
The game started 45 minutes late because of rain but the delay did not affect the Tigers out on the field. The Tigers came out swinging, scoring a run in the first and a season-high eight runs in the second frame. The previous high in a single inning was five for Connecticut back on June 18th at Tri-City.
In the second inning the Tigers sent 12 batters to the plate, banging out five hits, benefiting from three errors and ended up scoring eight runs. The Tigers scored six of their runs without the team recording an out. The highlight of the inning was a controversial three-run double down the first base line that got caught up around the Tigers bullpen. The play made it 7-0 and Bauml had a career night for the Tigers, going 5-6 with three doubles and four RBI's. The three doubles and five hits is the most in a game for a Tigers player this season.
Austin Athmann had a career night for the Tigers, the Tigers catcher delivered with three hits, including a double, two runs batted in and scored two runs scored. The three hits are the most in a game for Athmann this year and he collected his first extra base hit as a professional.
Cesar Gonzalez continues to swing a hot bat, grabbing two more hits tonight and drove in two. Gonzalez is riding a four-game hits streak for the Tigers. Daniel Pinero earned his first multi-hit game of the season with Connecticut going 2-4 with an RBI.
Kyle Funkhouser started the game and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and struck out two Lake Monsters. Ryan Castellanos pitched the rest of the way, going six innings and picked up his fifth win of the season.
The Tigers go for the sweep tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers victory matches them with State College for the best record in the New York-Penn League.
