Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

NILES, Ohio- The bats that led to the Scrappers 5-1 win over Batavia Sunday were non existent in the double header on Tuesday. The Scrappers failed to score in both ballgames, falling 8-0 in the first game and 1-0 in the second game.

The Jammers offensively got going early against Scrappers starter Luis Gomez. Jamestown plated three in the third, thanks in large part to a RBI double from 1st baseman Edwin Espinal.

The three-run third was followed by a four-run fourth, as Espinal added a two-run single to make it a 7-0 Jamestown advantage. The Jammers would get one more run in the fifth to push it to the 8-0 final score.

Jamestown reliever Justin Topa picked up the win (5-2), Gomez the loss (0-2). Matt Whitehouse took the bump for the second game, and turned around the pitching fortunes for the Scrappers.

Whitehouse went three innings, allowing just one run, which wasn't earned. He also struck out three, walking just one Jammers hitter. Unfortunately, the one unearned run came back to bite the Scrappers.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Dan Collins reached on an error, and then came around to score on a wild pitch for the only run scored in the second game. The loss went to Whitehouse (4-1), Jammers reliever Andy Otamendi the win (2-1). Henry Hirsch picked up his second save in the game.

The Scrappers and Jammers will finish out the series tomorrow. First pitch for both games will be 7:05.
