New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Joe Ness scattered 6 hits over 5 innings as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 4-2 Wednesday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The loss dropped the Cards to 25-24, while the Scrappers improved to 24-25. Ness (3-1) picked up his third victory of the season and catcher Mike Woodson had two hits, including a solo home run, as Mahoning Valley took game one of a three game series. New Jersey starter Quinton Robertson fell to 0-1 with the loss.

Mahoning Valley jumped out to the early lead with 2 runs in the top of the first. Jose Constanza singled back up the middle, stole second and scored on Matthew Fornasieres double to right-center for the games first run. Andrew Lytle followed one out later with a single through the hole at shortstop to score Fornasiere and give the Scrappers the 2-0 lead.

Woodson led off the top of the fifth with a blast that hooked inside the left field foul pole for his first home run of the season and a 3-0 Scrappers lead.

The Cardinals cut the lead to one in their half of the fifth. With runners on first and third and two outs, center fielder Sean Danielson laid down a bunt in front of the mound. Ness fielded the ball cleanly, but threw wildly to first, allowing both runners to score and advancing Danielson to second. Ness worked out of further trouble, however, by striking out Daniel Nelson.

Mahoning Valley extended the lead to two in the seventh. Chris Clem singled, moved to second on Woodsons single and was sacrificed to third by Jose Chavez. Evandy De Leons RBI fielders choice scored Clem with the fourth Mahoning Valley run.

Dustin Ruddy worked two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save.

The teams return to action Thursday, August 11 for the second game of the series. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. New Jersey looks to left hander Zack Zuercher (4-4, 3.80) to end a mini two-game losing streak, while the Scrappers are set to send Jensen Lewis (3-0, 1.74) to the mound.
