St. George RoadRunners News Release
YUMA, AZ - One night after snapping a Golden Baseball League high 12-game road losing streak, the St. George RoadRunners looked like a team eager to start a win streak. Leading 5-0 after the visiting half of the seventh raised those expectations until the host Yuma Scorpions scored six times in the bottom of the frame to defeat the RoadRunners 6-5 on Thursday night at Desert Sun Stadium.
St. George dropped six of seven games on the roadtrip and sit 14-28 on the year. Yuma (26-17) will hold on to at least a half-game lead in the GBL South over Maui with the comeback win.
Lefty starter Jon Dutton cruised through five innings of scoreless baseball before allowing a pair of singles in the seventh. With two outs, Johny Celis went yard to close the STG lead to 5-3. Eude Brito entered the game in relief. He was greeted with Peeter Ramos knocking home the tying run with a single and scoring the eventual game-winner on a Walter Correa double.
Brito (0-2) got tagged with the loss giving up two runs on two hits without recording an out. Dutton would leave with a no decision tossing 6.2 innings of four-run, eight-hit ball. Yuma's Jose Rojas improved to 1-1 despite scattering the St. George tallies in the seventh.
The RoadRunners took the early lead in the first when Jermy Acey plated a returning C.J. Lang.
Dutton helped his own cause with an RBI double in the fourth. He would score on a Yuma error off a Vic Buttler grounder to short. Two more came across for St. George in the seventh. Buttler lead off with a triple and scored on a double by Lang. Brett Flowers brought in the final STG run with a sacrifice fly.
The boys return home for a home series to close out the first half with the defending league champion Calgary Vipers. First pitch on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field is set for 7:05pm MDT. The short series will feature a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 4:05pm.
John Potter returns behind the mic to bring live coverage on the RoadRunners Radio Network beginning at 7:00pm on ESPN SportsRadio 1210 and Network1Sports.com.
