Victoria Seals Blank Maui In Game Two

July 8, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Hoping to equal a franchise-high five game win streak, the Victoria Seals returned to Iron Maehara Stadium to take on Na Koa Ikaika Maui on Wednesday night. Giving left-hander Isaac Hess (0-0) his second start of the season, the Seals were up against Gregorio Martinez (1-2) on the mound for the home side.

With both pitchers strong out of the gate, the contest went scoreless into the seventh inning of play. Finally breaking the deadlock in that frame, Matt Kavanaugh roped his third hit of the game, and just the third of the night overall for Victoria, over the right field fence to put the Seals up 1-0.

As Hess cruised through a seventh shutout inning on the mound and Aaron Easton came in to pitch a quick eighth frame for Victoria, the Seals found the insurance they were looking for in the top of the ninth. Back-to-back singles courtesy of Josh Arhart and Brian Rios to lead off the inning set the stage for Kavanaugh once again, and the Victoria right-fielder came up with his fourth hit of the game to make it 2-0 Seals.

Turning to Brandon Villafuerte in the bottom of the ninth, the Victoria closer left the bases loaded for Maui to claim a fifth-straight road win for Victoria, while also capturing his team's fifth consecutive win overall to put the Seals back at .500 (20-20) despite a 10-game losing skid in June.

Isaac Hess was brilliant on the mound for Victoria, and earned his first win of the season while Gregorio Martinez' strong outing was spoiled by a career night from Matt Kavanaugh, who finished 4-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Seals to victory.
