Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. (July 8, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers committed four errors and stranded 13 runners on base, including the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, as the Calgary Vipers snapped a 12-game losing skid in beating the Flyers, 6-5, at Goodwin Field on Thursday night. Calgary used four unearned runs to get the best of Orange County and avoid a sweep.
Orange County closed the Viper lead with a pair of runs in the ninth inning on a David Harris RBI-single and a Tyler Keeble ground ball RBI, but the Flyers couldn't bring home the tying run with two outs as Claudio Galva struck out Eric Pringle to end the game for his ninth save for Calgary. The Vipers avoided setting a new GBL record for futility, as their 12-game losing streak tied the Japan Samurai Bears as the GBL's longest.
Calgary pushed ahead with three unearned runs in the top of the seventh off of a pair of Flyers errors. Caonabo Cosme's two-run triple broke a 3-3 tie, and Jorge Mejia drove in Cosme on the second Flyers error of the inning for a 6-3 Calgary lead.
For the second time in three games, Jonny Kaplan led off the game with a solo homerun, and the Vipers used a Kevin Price double and Julio Ramirez RBI-single for an early 2-0 lead. Calgary added a run in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Jorge Mejia reached second base on a dropped fly ball to right field and score from second base on a wild pitch that skidded into the dugout for a 3-0 Vipers lead.
Orange County struck for two runs in the bottom of the third. Jim Goethals singled to get on base, and Matt Durkin sacrificed him to second base. After a Steve Boggs walk and a Derek Perren fielders choice, Jimmy Rohan singled home Goethals. One batter later, Keith Ginter singled to cash Perren within a run, 3-2.
The Flyers tied the game, 3-3, in the sixth inning as Zach Mandelblatt singled to get on base and stole second before Boggs cash him in on a single to right field
Flyers starter Matt Durkin did not factor into the decision in his ninth start of the year, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in six inning of work while striking out three and walking five. Bryan Harris took the hard luck loss as the pitcher on the mound during the two-error seventh inning.
