New Mexico Scorpions News Release

SCORPIONS RECAP –

SCORPIONS 4, TOPEKA 3 – Konrad McKay scored on a rebound with 8:19 left in the third period to lift the Scorpions to a 4-3 win over the Tarantulas on Friday. Randy Murphy (1g-2a) and Peter Ambroziak (3a) each had three points for the Scorpions, with all of the points coming in the first period. Mike Oliveira added a goal and an assist for the Scorpions. Miguel Beaudry made 29 saves in goal.

WICHITA 6, SCORPIONS 1 – The Thunder scored four power play goals and added a shorthanded tally to claim a 6-1 victory over the Scorpions on Saturday. Shawn Legault scored the only Scorpions goal late in the second period on the power play. The game featured a season-high 116 penalty minutes between the teams.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

AMARILLO – The Scorpions face the first of seven meetings this season with the Gorillas, who are off to a slow start despite returning ten players from last year's playoff team. The Gorillas snapped a six-game winless skid with a 5-3 win at home yesterday over Tulsa. 2004 CHL All-Star Derek Hahn is off to another strong start with 17 points (7g-10a) in 11 games. Shawn Degagne (2-2-1, 3.28 GAA) and Steve Briere (1-4-1, 3.78 GAA) have been splitting time in goal. The Gorillas are 16th in the CHL allowing 3.82 goals per game.

ODESSA – Although the Jackalopes lost two shootout games over the weekend, they are still off to a great start with a 7-1-2 record entering Wednesday's game at Colorado. The Jackalopes edged the Scorpions by a 2-1 score on Nov. 13, and this weekend's meetings mark the only games at Tingley Coliseum between the clubs this season. They will meet one final time in the Scorpions' penultimate game at Odessa on March 18. Sebastien Thinel scored the game-winning goal in that first meeting and leads the Jackalopes with 16 points (9g-7a), followed by Mike Rutter (2g-9a-11pts). Mike Gorman is 6-1-2 in goal with a 2.49 GAA.

500 WATCH – With three assists on Friday at Topeka, Scorpions left wing Peter Ambroziak is two points away from 500 for his professional career. In 275 games with the Scorpions, Ambroziak has amassed 322 of his total over five-plus seasons. The 33 year-old is the Scorpions' all-time leader in points, goals, assists and games played.

HOME SWEET HOME – After playing nine of their first 13 games on the road, and spending more time outside Albuquerque (25 days) than in it (18 days) dating back to the start of training camp, New Mexico plays seven of its next eight games and ten of the next 13 contests at Tingley Coliseum, where they are currently 3-0-1 this season. Only San Angelo and Odessa join the Scorpions in not having lost a game in regulation at home so far this season.

ROSTER MOVES – Clint Wensley was placed on the 45-Day Injured Reserve list on Friday after suffering a knee injury in a Nov. 3 game at Oklahoma City. Rookie defenseman Trevor Wolfe was signed to take Wensley's place on the roster. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Toledo, Ohio played last season for the University of Findlay before turning pro with the Texas Wildcatters of the ECHL.

STINGERS – Despite only being 13 games into the season, the Scorpions don't have any more trips to teams in the states of Kansas and Oklahoma, where four of the Scorpions' Northern Conference rivals and two of the Scorpions' three Northwest Division foes call home (Tulsa and Oklahoma City in Oklahoma; Topeka and Wichita in Kansas)... Mike Oliveira is tied for third in the CHL with 11 goals, and still leads with eight power play goals... Miguel Beaudry is tied for second with seven wins.
