Killer Bees Weekly Notes

November 22, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

TOUGH TIMES CONTINUE, BUT THEY ARE GETTING BETTER

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees went through another unsuccessful week of play and now begin another busy week looking to end their current eight-game winless streak. The Bees have three games on the schedule this week, as they are amidst an 11 games in 19 days span. The positive is that the Bees are building their confidence. The Bees bounced back from a 3-0 deficit Saturday night against Corpus Christi to eventually fall in overtime 4-3. They were able to pick up a standing-point with the overtime loss, which was their first standing-point collected in six games.

THIS WEEK'S "INSIDE THE NUMBERS"

2 - Second Period Goals - Heading into last Saturday's game against Corpus Christi, the Killer Bees had only tallied two second period goals on the year. They scored two second period goals in the second period over the Rayz to double their season's totals for second period scoring.

3 - Consecutive Road Games - Unfortunately for Killer Bees goaltender Jacque Vezina, he has played in three road games this season and in each of them he has allowed a goal on the first shot on goal.

98 - Combined Shots - Bees defensemen Jason Tessier and Derek Holland have combined for 98 shots on goal, ranking Tessier (50) second in the league and Holland (48) third in the league amongst defensemen in shots on goal.

SHOOTING MYSTERY

Rio Grande Valley ranks last in the league in average goals scored per game (2.17) and is ranked third in the league in shots per game with 35.8. Place the combination together and it gives the Bees a 6% shooting percentage as a team, which ranks last in the league. Rio Grande Valley has out-shot the opposition in nine of their 12 games (leads league) and they have a 2-6-1 record in those contests. Only four teams in the league have losing records when out-shooting their opponents. A stat that justifies the Bees record with the stats given is their goaltending save percentage. Bees goaltenders have combined for a CHL low 85.5% save percentage. Jacque Vezina currently ranks last in the league with an 84.6% save percentage.

BEE OF THE WEEK

This week's "Bee of the Week" for their performance over the prior week is issued to Sean Gillam. The Bees defenseman registered 3 points in the week's four games with a goal and two assists. Gillam tied a season high with a three-game point streak during the week. The Lethbridge, Alberta native and Team Captain leads Bees defensemen in assists with 4.

THIS IS A FIRST

Late Monday afternoon, the CHL announced Ryan Shmyr has been issued a six-game suspension for his checking from behind and game misconduct penalty received Friday against Memphis after running Scott English into the boards. Ryan Shmyr has played in 212 games in the WPHL/CHL over his career and currently ranks 32nd among active penalty minute leaders in all of minor professional hockey (1775 PIMs), 8th among active (30th overall) WPHL/CHL penalty minutes leaders all-time (1053 PIMs) and holds the WPHL single-season record (before the merger with the CHL) for penalty minutes in a season (437 PIMs), but this is the first time he has been issued a suspension at this level for a direct incident. He missed 3 games in the 99/00 season for accumulating game misconducts. Shmyr becomes the second Killer Bee ever to receive a suspension. Andrew Taylor received a one-game suspension last season after returning to the ice to aid in the separation of a fight.
