CHL Announces Oakley Player & Goaltender of the Week
November 22, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Both the Corpus Christi Rayz and the Fort Worth Brahmas posted perfect records the past week in large part due to the play of Oakley CHL Player of the Week Jason Baird from Corpus Christi and Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week Dan Murphy from Fort Worth. Baird recorded multiple points in each of the Rayz four victories, while Murphy was in net for two of the Brahmas' three wins this week. Both club's undefeated weeks have them atop the standings in their respective divisions.
In Corpus Christi, the Rayz won twice at home and twice on the road this week, with Baird figuring prominently in each victory. In a 6-4 home win over Memphis on November 17th Baird had his seventh and eight goals of the season. In Friday's 4-3 win at Austin, he added his ninth goal of the year along with two assists. To cap off his outstanding week, he reached the 10-goal plateau and added four assists in a home and home sweep of Rio Grande Valley. Baird enjoyed 27 and 26 goal seasons with Indianapolis the last two seasons, and is on pace for career highs of 46 goals and 87 points. Baird was also named MVP of the 2004 CHL All-Star Game in Albuquerque, New Mexico, following a three goal and one assist performance.
The Fort Worth Brahmas have dramatically improved this season, and goaltender Dan Murphy has been a major factor in his clubs' resurgence. With wins this past week over Topeka and Amarillo, Murphy improved his record to 7-2-0 on the season. November 16th he made 32 saves as the Brahmas topped Topeka 5-2, then made 33 saves in a 4-2 win at Amarillo on Saturday. In ten games this season, the Nanaimo, British Columbia native has allowed more than three goals against only twice, and has one shut-out performance this year. Last season, the Brahmas did not record their ninth victory of the year until January 2nd, while this season they have enjoyed an outstanding start of 9-2-1, leading the Northeast Division by five points.
