Yuma Scorpions News Release
Yuma, AZ -- The Yuma Scorpions split the KYMA Night Double Header.
Game 1
Gilbert De La Varahad Major League pitching tonight as he threw a complete game. De La Vara had 8strikeouts and only allowed 1-run on 3-hits. He had a no hitter for 3 1/3 innings. Edmonton pitcher Rory Shortell was outmatched throwing 6 innings and only allowing 1-run as well. He earned a no decision in game 1.
The game was a nail bitter as Edmonton struck first with an RBI double by Collaro in the top of the 4th. The Scorpions answered back in the bottom of the 6th as Muse hit a double off the left field fence with 2-outs. Jared McDonald then cashed in on the double with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 7th, an error by shortsop Enrique Cruz allowed Beau Riportella to advance to first. Zach Larson then followed with a single of his own and Gathright was hit by a pitch. With no outs in the inning Ponce stepped in and hit a walk-off single to win the game.
Game 2
The second game was about the 3rd inning. Edmonton was able to put up 5-runs, but the Scorpions rallied in the bottom half to erase the damage and found themselves only down 5-4. Jacob Wiley only lasted 2 2/3 innings and picked up the loss (0-3). Hyrnio (EDM) threw the same amount of innings, but was fortunate enough to have a lead when he left in a 7-inning game to pick up the win.
The Scorpions tried a late inning comeback again, but failed to produce ending the game on a 6-4-3 double play. There were a few mental errors in the second half of a double header as JJ Muse was held at thirdbase early in the game. It seemedMuse could have made the turn due to the Edmonton centerfielder playing too deep on the play. It was all for not as the Scorpions were in positionto strike at the end of the game.
The Scorpions are looking ahead to Monday's Pack the Park night withtickets starting at $1 and a Jim McDermott Cash drop in between games. This will bethe second doubleheader of the series with a game time of 5:35pm. The Scorpions are now 7-14, 5.5-games behind.
