Edmonton Capitals News Release

Yuma, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals split the first of back-to-back double-headers against the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday, dropping the first game 2-1 before rebounding with a 6-5 decision in the second game at Desert Sun Stadium.

The Caps and Scorpions are scheduled to play seven North American League regular season games in five days, including seven-inning double-headers on Sunday and Monday. Edmonton won the first game of the hectic series 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday prior to Sunday's double-header split.

Game one was a defensive affair, as the Caps got a solid pitching effort from starter Rory Shortell, who gave up two runs in six innings with four strikeouts. Their offence could only manufacture one run, however, on an RBI single from third baseman Carlos Duncan in the fourth inning.

The teams were tied 1-1 heading into the deciding seventh inning, leading to the game-winning single by Scorpions second baseman Carlos Leon with the bases loaded. Gilbert De La Vara pitched the entire seven-inning game for Yuma, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out eight Caps.

Almost all of the offence in the second game occurred in the third inning, as the Caps exploded for five runs only to give up four to the Scorpions to make it 5-4. The teams traded runs from there to give the Caps the one-run win. Starting pitcher Mike Hrynio got the victory for Edmonton, giving up four runs through 2.2 innings while striking out four Scorpions, and closer Bartolome Fortunato picked up his second save in as many nights.

Catcher Nick Valdez was the top offensive performer for the Caps in the second game, going 3-for-4 and cashing in the eventual winning RBI in the fifth inning. Scorpions player-manager Jose Canseco, a former MLB all-star, World Series champion and American League MVP, was 0-for-1 on the day with a strikeout, a walk and one run scored.

The Caps (13-9) and Scorpions (7-14) play their second straight double-header on Monday starting at 6:35 MT, with two more games slated for Tuesday and Wednesday in Yuma. The teams then head north back to Edmonton on Thursday to open a four-game series at TELUS Field. The series opener is another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear, featuring $3 beer.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
