Scorpions Players Look To Garner League Awards

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-When the Scorpions started the season with a 3-8-0 record, nobody was talking individual player awards or making the playoffs. Over the next four months things have changed and the Scorpions are talking about both those topics now.

Friday, the Central Hockey League (CHL) announced the finalists for various season accolades. The Scorpions have placed three players in two different categories.

David Cacciola is one of six finalists looking to capture the CHL Most Outstanding Goaltender award. Since arriving in New Mexico via trade from Bossier-Shreveport, Cacciola has helped the Scorpions turn their season around.

In 23 games this season, Cacciola has gone 19-3-1. The Burlington, Mass. native is currently second among CHL goalies with a 2.41 goals against average and fourth with a .924 save percentage.

Joining Cacciola in keeping the puck out of the net is defenseman Aaron MacInnis. MacInnis has also helped the Scorpions by scoring key goals this season.

While scoring 10 goals this season, five have been game winning goals, tops among league defensemen. He is also currently second in plus/minus rating with a +29 rating.

It was no secret the Scorpions started the season as one of the CHL's youngest teams. With eight rookies currently on the roster, they have often been counted on to lead the team to victory.

Both Ryan McLeod and Lance Herauf are now competing to be named the CHL Rookie of the Year. In 57 games this season, McLeod leads all CHL rookies with 60 points, including 38 assists.

Herauf has also showed during his first year he belongs with the top rookies. Through 57 games played, the Balgonie, Sask. native is third among rookies with 56 points and second to McLeod in assists with 34.

The winners will be announced in the coming weeks. The votes are cast by CHL teams' communication departments, head coaches and media members.
