New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[AMARILLO, Tex.]-A five goal third period propelled the Gorillas to a 7-2 victory over New Mexico Saturday night. Bill Vandermeer led the way for Amarillo with a hat trick and three assists.
Amarillo jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period. Vandermeer opened the scoring with a slap shot from just inside the circle at the 6:34 mark. Less than three minutes later Nate Fornataro scored a power play goal from the same spot, vaulting the home team to a 2-0 lead.
The second period turned out to be the complete opposite of the opening frame. Craig Macdonald put the Scorpions on the board when he capitalized on an Amarillo turnover.
Late in the second period, Chris Robertson used every inch of his body to work the puck from the neutral zone into the offensive zone. Robertson found Konrad Reeder, who with one move was alone in front of the net. With only the goaltender to beat, Reeder lifted it up and over and into the net, tying the game.
The Gorillas took complete control in the final frame. David Nimmo scored the game winning goal on the power play six minutes into the period. Matt Miller scored his 13th goal of the season 49 seconds later.
Vandermeer continued his big night with another goal from the top of the circle at the 7:37 mark. Austin Sutter pushed the lead up to four with his 9th goal of the season two minutes later. Vandermeer completed his big night with a wrist shot on the power play.
The Scorpions return to home ice on Tuesday, January 29th when the Arizona Sundogs come calling. The game inside the Santa Ana Star Center begins at 7:15 p.m.
