Trenton Thunder News Release

(Norwich, CT)- Jeff Marquez and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Trenton Thunder shutout Connecticut, 2-0, on Friday night. It was 2nd straight 2-0 shutout for the Thunder, who have now not allowed a run in 24 straight innings.

Marquez (2-0) worked the first six innings for Trenton (6-1), winners of six straight games after losing their season opener. The Defenders (2-2) moved men into scoring position in the 2nd and 3rd Innings, but failed to score. Marquez allowed four hits with one walk and three strikeouts en route to the win.

On offense, the Thunder managed just three hits, two by RF Matt Carson. But it was Carson who produced both runs in the 5th Inning. Connecticut starter Ben Cox was Trenton 3B Aarom Baldiris with one out. Carson followed with a two-run homer for the only runs of the night. It was also the first homer of the season for Trenton. Cox (0-1) allowed two runs in five innings for the loss.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the Thunder bullpen took over. Righthander Scott Patterson blanked the Defenders over two innings. Gerardo Casadiego then worked a scoreless 9th Inning for his first save. He becomes the fourth different Trenton reliever to record a save in the first seven games.

The teams have a Saturday doubleheader scheduled to start at 2:05 PM to make up for Thursday's rainout. Trenton will send RHP Alan Horne (1-0, 5.40) to mound in the opener followed by RHP Brett Smith (0-0, 5.40) in the second game. Connecticut will counter with Darren Sack (1st start) and Chris Begg (0-0, 11.57).
