Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - Akron entered tonight's game just 0.5 games back of first-place Reading in the EL Southern Division standings. Akron would get on the board first in the second game of the four game series. Brian Barton got on base first with a double to left. Barton then scored from second following a steal and a throwing error by Baysox backstop Brian Bock, giving Akron a 1-0 lead. But the Baysox wouldn't wait around tonight to play catch up. The bottom of the first yielded three Bowie runs, Val Majewski brought around the first run for the Baysox, scoring Paco Figueroa on a single to right field, tying the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Nolan Reimold hit his third double in as many days, scoring Luis Hernandez and Val Majewski, putting the Baysox ahead, 3-1 and bringing the crowd of 6,572 to their feet.
Radhames Liz was a bit shaky on the hill following his first strikeout of the second inning. Asdrubal Cabrera doubled to left and was brought around to score by a Rodney Choy Foo single, cutting the Baysox lead to 3-2. Choy Foo then advanced to second on a wild pitch with Trevor Crowe at the plate. Crowe would then double to right, scoring Choy Foo, tying the game at 3-3. Liz would get out of the inning though, getting Argenis Reyes to ground out ending the second.
Luis Hernandez led off the third in a big way, hitting a lead off triple to deep center off of Areos starter Shawn Nottingham. Nottingham would walk Val Majewski in the very next at bat and Hernandez would come around to score when Oscar Salazar grounded into a double play, putting the Baysox ahead 4-3.
Liz's shakiness continued in the bottom of the frame as he walked three batters loading the bases with two outs. But the Baysox escaped the inning unscathed as Liz sat down Aeros catcher Wyatt Toregas on strikes, stranding all three runners.
Liz got back on track in the fourth sitting both Choy Foo and Crowe down on strikes and ending the inning getting Argenis Reyes to ground out.
Liz capped his night off in the fifth, getting Jordan Brown to ground into a force out for the first out of the inning. Liz then retired Ryan Goleski on strikes and got John Van Every to strike out swinging, which was Van Every's fourth K on the night.
Felix Romero then replaced Liz to start off the sixth inning and only gave up one hit getting out of the inning on a Brian Barton strikeout. Rommie Lewis replaced Romero in the eighth and the bullpen once again held up for the Baysox as the Aeros failed to reach base, as Cabrera struck out swinging, Toregas flew out to center and Choy Foo struck out consecutively ending the Aeros eighth.
Jim Hoey came in to close the game out in the ninth and did not disappoint converting his third save in as many attempts, closing out the game with Brian Barton going down on strikes. Radhames Liz got the win for the Baysox, his first (1-0) going five innings, giving up four hits, three runs and five walks, while striking out eight. The Baysox pitching staff gave up only five hits combined while striking out 15 Akron batters.
Shawn Nottingham took the loss for the Aeros, his first (0-1) going 4.1 innings seven hits and all four Baysox runs, while walking only three. The win improves the Baysox record to 4-4 on the season, while the Akron loss drops them to 3-2.
Luis Hernandez was the only Baysox player with multiple hits on the night (3-for-4) with two runs. "The first inning was big for us tonight, being able to take the early lead. Radhames was in trouble a little bit early on, he was working a little slow. But he worked fast in the last two innings and was better turning over the bullpen, which has been real solid for us." Manager Bien Figueroa said following the win, "Once Radhames got going tonight he was very good for us. This was a good win for us."
LHP Oscar Alvarez (1-0) takes the hill for the Baysox tomorrow. He'll square off against LHP Chuck Lofgren (1-0) for the visiting Aeros. First pitch for Saturday's contest is slated for 7:05 pm and includes a post-game FIREWORKS show and kids base run.
