Sarnia, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads travelled to Sarnia on Saturday afternoon to take on the Sarnia Sting. 16-year-old Ben Gaudreau got the start in goal for the Sting, while Joe Ranger made his first start since December 1st for the Steelheads.

The Steelheads came into the game coming off a 4-2 win over the North Bay Battalion. Keean Washkurak continued to play the best hockey of his career, as he registered 3 points (2G, 1A). The Sting also walked away with a victory on Friday night, defeating the London Knights by a score of 5-3.

Saturday's game represented the first time Steelheads forward Calvin Martin returned to play at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena, after being acquired by Mississauga from Sarnia back in October.

The Sting had two powerplay opportunities to start the game and opened the scoring on their second chance, as Jacob Perreault lifted a shot short-side on Ranger that snuck its way into the back of the net. Portokalis tied the game for the Steelheads, as he skated out from behind the net, turned and fired a shot past Ben Gaudreau. Mississauga took the lead, as Calvin Martin picked up a rebound on a shot from Thomas Harley to score against his former team. The Steelheads lead 2-1 heading into the intermission, while outshooting Sarnia 10-6.

Following the first period, Calvin Martin spoke about playing against his former team "It's a bit different, but it's nice. It's familiar here, I love this rink and it's great to play here today."

Cole Schwindt increased the Steelheads lead to two goals on the powerplay in the second, as he took a shot through the legs of Colton Kammerer that went upstairs on Gaudreau. With under a minute to go in the period, Jacob Perreault picked up a rebound off a shot from Ryan Roth, scoring his second goal of the game. The Steelheads took a one goal lead into the second intermission, with Ranger stopping 14/15 shots on goal in the period.

Sarnia tied the game just thirty seconds into the third period, as Anthony Tabak was able to beat Ranger five-hole. Nick Isaacson deflected a low shot on goal from James Hardie to regain the Steelheads lead. Aidan Prueter took a shot from the corner, picking up his own rebound as he stripped Sarnia's defence of the puck, before stepping in front and beating Gaudreau fivehole to make the score 5-3. Under a minute later, Tabak found Ryan McGregor off the rush, scoring on Ranger as the Sting cut away at the Steelheads lead. Sarnia tied the game as Tabak gave a pass to Justin Nolet, who found himself alone in front of the net, beating Ranger just under the crossbar.

James Hardie scored on a breakaway with five minutes to go, as Mississauga once again took the lead in the game. The Sting would not go down easily, as Sean Josling found Tabak on a crosscrease pass to tie the game at six. With a minute to go in the third period, Roth found Perreault in front of the net, who scored his third of the game, as Sarnia took a 7-6 lead. Sarnia would hold on to win the game, as the Steelheads fought back but couldn't find the equalizer.

Five different Steelheads recorded multi-point games in the contest, including Thomas Harley (2A), Cole Schwindt, James Hardie, William Portokalis, and Calvin Martin (1G, 1A). Cole Schwindt extended his point streak to 8-games in the loss (3G, 8A). Mississauga will look to bounce back on Sunday as they return to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre to take on Shane Wright and the Kingston Frontenacs.

Sunday's game marks the Steelheads annual Toys for Tots game, presented by Wawanesa Insurance, in partnership with the Peel Regional Police and Salvation Army.
