Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, VT- It took 13 innings for the Schooners to take the lead against Vermont Friday night in Montpelier, but they came away with the victory 4-2.

Vermont struck first in the bottom of the third innings. Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) led off the inning with a laser of a double into right center. After moving to third, he came in to score on a sac fly from Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan).

Mystic would answer back with a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Steven Barmakian (Westfield, NJ/ George Washington). Each team would add a run, and it would be 2-2 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Vermont had two great opportunities to score in the 9th and 10th innings, but were not able to push a run across. In the 9th, they left runners on first and second with one out, and in the 10th, bases loaded with one out. Those two innings would come back to haunt the Mountaineers, as they would head into the top of the 13th still 2-2.

Mystic was finally able to score two runs in the top of the 13th. With the bases loaded, Nano Santorelli (Yonkers, NY/ Seton Hall) doubled off the right field wall, bringing in two runs. That would be all Thomas Girard (Simsbury, CT/ Duke) would need, as he threw a 1-2-3 inning in his second inning of relief, picking up the win for the Schooners.

Vermont starter Brian Herrmann (Northport, NY/ Stony Brook) went seven innings in the no decision, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and six strikeouts. The loss went to Levi Abrahamson, who went 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three.

The Mountaineers (4-10) head to Sanford (8-5) Saturday to take on the Mainers. Vermont sits 5.5 games back of first place Valley (10-3). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
