Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8-7 in a ball game that had its fair share of lead changes aided by a big day at the plate by Stevie Mangrum and a brilliant relief outing by Nate Wrighter. Starter Drew Reveno went three innings allowing four earned runs but did not allow the game to get out of hand. Nic Enright was the first man out of the Newport bullpen and allowed three runs, only two of which were earned while striking out five over four innings and got the win. Nate Wrighter shut the door coming on in the eighth inning allowing one walk, one hit and no runs over two innings while striking out to pick up the long save, his fourth save on the year. The pride of Bryant University hasn't allowed a run all year, though the streak looked to be in jeopardy with runners on the corners and no outs, a situation he responded to by striking out the next three batters he faced.

The scoring began early in the ballgame as the Muskrats put up two in the first on RBI singles by Dakota Mulcay and Kyle Maurice. The Gulls immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning with two bases loaded walks drawn by Zach Hogueisson and Zach Britton which brought in Kody Hoese and Dalton Reed. In the top of the second Mason Calloway hit a double to give Winnipesaukee the lead once more but the Gulls again responded in the inning's bottom half with another bases loaded walk, drawn by Stevie Mangrum to bring in John Mazza. In the top of the third the Muskrats scored again on a double by Ryan Richard which scored one and would have scored two if not for a relay from center fielder Zach Hogueisson to shortstop Tim Tawa to catcher John Mazza which stopped the second runner dead in his tracks and ended the top half of the inning with a score of 4-3 Muskrats. In the bottom half Tim Tawa got his first RBI as a Gull with a single scoring Dillon Plew from third. The next time either team scored was the bottom of the fourth inning when Stevie Mangrum hit a two-run homerun scoring Kody Hoese as well as himself making the score 6-4 In the top of the fifth the Muskrats responded with a two-run homer of their own hit by Cacy Harper in the top of the fifth tying the game at 6. The Muskrats would then take the lead in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Steven Passatempo to make it 7-6. In the bottom of the sixth the Gulls got the lead back with a solo shot from Stevie Mangrum, his second homerun of the day and a single by John Mazza which scored Zach Britton.

The Gulls are now 9-6, half a game out from the first place Ocean State Waves who did not play today, while the Muskrats fell to 3-12. Newport will have a much-earned day off tomorrow before taking on Upper Valley (8-6) Sunday and returning home Monday for Aspire Dermatology Red Sox Night to take on the Northern Division Valley Blue Sox (10-3) in a night honoring Bill Lee, among other legendary Boston Red Sox players.
