Upper Valley Nighthawks News Release
HOLYOKE, Mass. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks could not heat up offensively, as they were restricted to only two hits in their 8-3 road loss to the Valley Blue Sox on Friday evening in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
The Blue Sox attacked early, as they put up three runs on two hits, one Nighthawks fielding error, and a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning.
In the third inning, former Nighthawk Frankie Gregoire doubled to drive in another run for Valley, and give them a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Sox offense remained hot in the fifth, as Ryan Perkins singled to leadoff the inning before scoring on a Richard Constantine double later in the inning.
Valley pitching was near perfect through five innings, as starter Cooper Bradford did not allow a single hit until Alvin Melendez (Fordham University) came to the dish with two men on base and only one out in the top of the sixth frame.
Walks were issued to Eddie Monica (Long Island University) and Drew Tipton (Arkansas State University) before the Whitestone, NY native singled to left field, and two runs came around to score after the ball was mishandled by the Blue Sox outfielder.
Melendez advanced to third base on a wild pitch and was driven in on an RBI single from Greg Hardison (UNC Greensboro), cutting Valley's lead down to 5-3.
The Blue Sox quickly countered in the bottom of the sixth with a 2-RBI single from Simon Whiteman that erase any Nighthawks progress, and gave Valley a 7-3 advantage.
The woes continued for the Nighthawks into the eighth inning, as Jake Coro scored on a passed ball and provided the Blue Sox with an additional insurance run.
Nighthawks starter Reid VanScoter (Binghamton University) tossed four innings, surrendering four runs on four hits, and striking out two. Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph's University) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, gave up four hits, three runs, and fanned four. Jack Ipsen (Bryant University) came in to finish the game for Upper Valley, giving up one run on two hits.
The Nighthawks return home tomorrow evening, playing host to the North Adams SteepleCats at 6:30 PM. It is Team Photo Giveaway Night at the ballpark, where all in attendance will receive a free poster sized team picture. If you can't make it to the field, Dan Stein will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 PM.
