Bats Fend off Danbury Rally for 11-9 Win

KEENE, NH - Danbury threatened in the ninth, but the Keene Swamp Bats (7-8) held on for their third straight win with an 11-9 victory over the Westerners (7-9) on Friday night at Alumni Field in Keene.

A two-run shot from Randy Taveras (Marist) brought Danbury within a pair at 11-9 in the ninth and the visitors had the bases loaded with two outs later in the frame, but RHP Griff McGarry (Virginia) fanned Spencer Harbert (Kentucky) to end the game.

McGarry (1.0 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) got the final three outs for the SwampBats.

Trailing 6-5 at the time, Keene took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning.

In the afore-mentioned three-run fifth, a single and a walk put two men on before Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern) came through with an RBI double and a throwing error on the play charged to Danbury SS Eddie McCabe allowed the go-ahead run to score and give Keene the lead for good. Jacob Koos (Stetson) followed Golden and reached on an error charged to Taveras at second allowing a run to score and open up an 8-6 advantage for the SwampBats.

LHP Jackson Aldam (Sacred Heart) gave up the three runs (one earned) on two hits in the inning and was dealt the loss for Danbury to fall to 0-1.

Danbury grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Taveras led off with a double and scored on Drew Frederic's (Troy) RBI single.

In the top of the second, Brayden Combs (Kentucky) reached with a one-out double and scored on an RBI single from McCabe (Georgetown) to give the Westerners a 2-0 edge.

The SwampBats plated three runs in the home half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Cordell Dunn Jr. (Grayson College) crushed a solo shot to left to start the frame and back-to-back singles put a pair of men on before Michael Woodworth (UConn) gave the hosts the edge with a two-run single. The home run was Dunn Jr's. first of the summer.

Aaron Antonini's (Middle Tennessee) two-run homer in the top of the third gave Danbury the lead right back at 4-3.

In the bottom half of the inning, Alex Griffith delivered a one-out double and came around to score on an RBI single from Dunn Jr. that tied the game at four apiece.

Keene grabbed a 5-4 lead for the time being in the fourth as Koos doubled, went to third on a single and scored on a Charlie Concannon (St. Joseph's) sac fly.

Westerners starter Trey McLoughlin (n/d)-a Fairfield product-allowed the five runs on eight hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout in four innings of work.

SwampBats starter Colby Dunlop (UConn) surrendered six runs on eight hits to go along with four strikeouts in 6.0 IP and earned his first win of the summer to even his record at 1-1.

Danbury regained the lead at 6-5 in the fifth as Nico Popa (Pitt) was hit by a pitch and scored from first on Taveras' RBI double and the latter scored on Antonini's RBI groundout.

Dunn Jr. knocked in a run with an RBI single in the sixth to make it a 9-6 game in favor of the SwampBats.

Keene broke the game open with a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh to take an 11-7 lead courtesy of two Danbury errors in the frame.

Five different SwampBats had multi-hit games: Dunn Jr. (4-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R), Golden (3-4, 2B, RBI, 3 R), Griffith (2-3, 2B, 2 R), Koos (2-3, 2B, SB, 3 R) and Woodworth (2-5, 2 RBI, SB).

The SwampBats host the Valley Blue Sox on Saturday night at Alumni Field and Kennesaw State University RHP Jake McLinskey (0-1, 2.70) will get the start for Keene. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
