Scholtens Stymies Hooks

San Antonio received another terrific start from right-hander Jesse Scholtens in its 4-1 victory over Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

After needing late heroics in its memorable Saturday night win over the Hooks, the Missions started Sunday's contest with some early offense against lefty Ryan Hartman. Fernando Tatis Jr. was plunked by a Hartman (1-1) pitch to begin the frame before moving to third when Josh Naylor followed with a single to right. Ty France banged into a double play, but it scored Tatis Jr. with the game's first run.

An inning later, Auston Bousfield pushed the San Antonio lead to 2-0 with a ground rule double to right field.

The two runs of support were enough for Scholtens, who was perfect through four innings Sunday. However, in the fifth, the Fairfield, CA native ran into major trouble when the Hooks loaded the bases with nobody out. Scholtens got next batter Josh Rojas to fly out to centerfielder Michael Gettys. The fly ball appeared deep enough to plate Taylor Jones from third, but Gettys unleased a rocket from center to complete an impressive double play. Scholtens fanned Lorenzo Quintana to end the threat.

Corpus Christi would finally get on the board in the seventh against Scholtens and reliever Eric Yardley courtesy of a Rojas sacrifice fly. Yardley and lefty Brad Wieck made sure the 2-1 lead stuck by keeping the Hooks from scoring anything further through the eighth.

San Antonio's offense got going again in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Brock Dykxhoorn as RBI-singles from Peter Van Gansen and Rod Boykin pushed the lead to three.

Jose Castillo worked around a Randy Cesar one-out double to notch his third save of the season.

Scholtens (4-1) allowed just one run on one hit and one walk, while fanning eight over six and a third innings to match teammate Logan Allen for the most wins in the Texas League.

Boykin finished with a game-high three hits, while Naylor (2-for-4) and Van Gansen (2-for-4) also chipped in with multi-hit efforts.

San Antonio (20-10) resumes its four-game series with Corpus Christi (17-13) Monday on H-E-B Family Night presented by ESPN SA 1250 AM/94.5 FM. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Cal Quantrill (2-2, 3.03) will get the ball for the Missions as they look to clinch the series. The Hooks will counter with fellow righty Akeem Bostick (0-1, 3.92).

Notes: The Missions have now won a season-best six games in a row in addition to being a season-high 10 games over .500.
