Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The Hooks dropped their second straight at Wolff Stadium on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-1 to the Missions in front of 4,039 fans.
Hooks starter Ryan Hartman allowed a run in the first inning. The lefty hit Fernando Tatis, Jr. to begin the game and Tatis would eventually score on a ground ball double play.
The Missions made it a 2-0 advantage in the third. Webster Rivas began the frame with a single. After striking out the two following hitters, Hartman allowed a single and then an RBI double to Austin Bousfield.
San Antonio righty Jesse Scholtens got off to a quick start, tossing four perfect innings to begin his outing. He ran into trouble in the fifth as Taylor Jones was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Ryne Birk then laced a single into right field and Randy Cesar walked to load the bases with nobody out.
Josh Rojas then lifted a shallow fly ball to centerfield as Jones tagged up from third and raced for the plate. Missions centerfielder Michael Gettys fired a strike to home plate and Jones was tagged out. Lorenzo Quintana struck out to end the frame as Corpus Christi came up empty.
Scholtens began the seventh for San Antonio. After Yordan Alvarez reached base on a dropped third strike, Scholtens was replaced by right-hander Eric Yardley. Yardley allowed back-to-back singles by Birk and Cesar to load the bases. Josh Rojas stepped in and produced a sac fly to score Alvarez, cutting San Antonio's lead to 2-1.
In the eighth, left-hander Brad Wieck allowed a base hit to the Hooks but nothing more.
Brock Dykxhoorn replaced Hartman in the sixth and spun scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh. In the eighth, Dykxhoorn allowed a double Kyle Overstreet and a walk to Michael Gettys to put a pair on the bases. Peter Van Gansen then hit a shallow pop up into left field that dropped between Cesar and Alvarez as the two collided. A run came into score to extend San Antonio's lead to 3-1.
Cesar stayed in the game while Alvarez was replaced in left field by Stephen Wrenn. Alvarez walked to the Hooks dugout under his own power.
After the Missions tacked on another tally in the eighth to make it 4-1, lefty Jose Castillo threw a scoreless ninth to deny the Hooks of a comeback rally.
Corpus Christi continues the series in San Antonio on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Hooks send right-hander Akeem Bostick to the hill while the Missions counter with righty Cal Quantrill.
The game can be heard on 1360 AM KKTX with Michael Coffin and Sam Levitt beginning at 6:45 p.m.
