Schenn Named to Canada's National Junior Team

LOS ANGELES, CA - Los Angeles Kings prospect forward Brayden Schenn has been named to Team Canada's roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships, Hockey Canada and the Kings announced today. The prestigious tournament is slated to take place in Buffalo and Niagara, N.Y. from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5.
Team Canada's roster features 22 players and Schenn is one of four returning players from last year's silver-medal winning squad. Team Canada's first game of the tournament will be Dec. 26 vs. Russia.
Schenn, 19, played in eight games for the Kings this season before being assigned back to his junior team (Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League) on Dec. 3. In eight games with the Kings he had two points (both assists) and zero penalty minutes. Schenn also appeared in seven games with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League before his assignment to Brandon (on a conditioning assignment), recording seven points (3-47) and four penalty minutes. In two games with Brandon he has four points (1-34) and two penalty minutes.
Along with his silver medal last year, Schenn has represented Canada five other times. He won a gold medal for Canada at the 2008 World U-18 Championships and 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He earned a bronze medal for Team Canada West at the 2008 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Schenn also represented the WHL in the Canada-Russia Challenge in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
The Kings' first-round choice (fifth overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, aSchenn is a 6-1, 190-pound native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He made his NHL debut last season and became the third youngest player to ever play for the club.
Schenn has played for the Wheat Kings the past three seasons. Last season, the Wheat Kings advanced to the Memorial Cup before losing to Calgary.
Canada has medaled at 12 straight IIHF World Junior Championships including gold medal performances in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, silver medals in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2010 and bronze medals in 2000 and 2001.
Kings prospect Linden Vey participated in Canada's National Junior Team's selection camp. Kings prospect Derek Forbort has been participating in USA's National Junior Team selection camp.
