Schaefer Leads Barons to 5-2 Win at Toronto
December 9, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
TORONTO, ONT - Nolan Schaefer returned to the Barons with a 32-save performance Friday night leading the Barons to a 5-2 win over the Marlies. Schaefer, who had spent a little over a month with the San Jose Sharks, made his first appearance for the Barons since October 15th and improved to 2-2-0 at the AHL level on the year.
The Barons caught some breaks in the opening twenty minutes leading to a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Matt Carkner's slap shot from the Toronto blue line bounced off a couple of skates and into the Marlies goal for the opening score of the game. The goal by Carkner was his second of the season and was assisted by Tom Cavanagh and Steve Bernier. Cavanagh would then add another goal to the scoreboard by poke-checking a puck off Toronto defenseman Jay Harrison that surprised the Marlies' goaltender, J.F. Racine and went into the Toronto net for a 2-0 lead. Nolan Schaefer, reassigned by the San Jose Sharks on Thursday made his first start for the Barons since October 15th and made 11-saves in the opening period.
Toronto out-scored the Barons 2-1 in the second period trimming the Cleveland lead to 3-2 after forty minutes of action. Jay Harrison scored his second goal of the season from the blueline with an assist from former Barons forward Mike Hoffman. Both of Harrison's goals this season have come against the Barons. Cleveland answered with a power play goal from rookie Steve Bernier, his 7th of the year unassisted. Two minutes later Toronto would answer on another slap shot from the blue line, this time from Brendan Bell, who scored his first of the year.
Nolan Schaefer was the story of the third period with 13-saves in the period preserving the Barons fifth road win of the season. Tim Conboy scored an insurance goal for the Barons on the power play with 1:55 remaining after Schaefer stood strong in goal shutting down the Marlies and their three power play attempts. An empty net goal from Cleveland forward Josh Hennessy put the final touches on a 5-2 Barons win.
Tomorrow night the Barons will travel to Grand Rapids for a meeting with the North Division leading Griffins at 8pm EST. The game will be carried live via the B2 Networks with links to the broadcast available at www.clevelandbarons.net. The Barons then return home for a Sunday match up with the West Division leading Houston Aeros at 5pm EST. The Barons Family Fun Pack Ticket Special is available for Sunday's game and available at the Quicken Loans Arena Box Office.
