Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Remington's Seafood and Steakhouse, are pleased to announce that over $400 was raised during the first half of the 2007-2008 regular season for the Brandon Sun Fund for Kids.

Saves for the Sun Fund for Kids is a fundraising initiative introduced by the Wheat Kings last season, in conjunction with Remington's Seafood and Steakhouse, located in the Town Centre.

For each save made on home ice this season by Brandon goalkeepers Andrew Hayes and Joe Caligiuri, Remingtons will donate $1 to the Sun Fund for Kids. The Fund is a partnership between the Brandon Sun and Child and Family Services of western Manitoba and has been in operation since the mid eighties. It was established to raise funds to send disadvantaged children to camp.

The Child and Family Services Division is committed to the department's goals of keeping children safe and protected, encouraging individual, family and community responsibility in times of need as well as ensuring that services are delivered in the most effective and cost efficient manner possible.

Through the team's first 21 home games, Brandon's goalkeepers have combined to stop 447-499 shots in compiling a 14-7-0 record at Westman Communications Group Place.

Meanwhile the club has announced that over $4,000 has been generated for the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation and its popular Goals for Kids Campaign.

Local businesses donate up to $25 each time the Wheat Kings score a goal - at home or on the road. Through the first 39 regular season games, Brandon has scored 156 goals (3.9 goals per game). Entering Wednesday night's game against the Warriors in Moose Jaw, the Goals for Kids campaign had received $4,200in donations this season.

20-year old Tyler Dittmer leads the team with 27 goals, which translates to $675. Former Medicine Hat Tiger Matt Lowry with 18 goals and $450 in donations.

"Every child deserves an enhanced quality of life and if we can help bring about that, we should all be happy," says Wheat Kings' director of marketing and media relations Rick Dillabough. "Fundraising isn't just about raising money. It's about those children that benefit from our community outreach programs."

The Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation is a non-profit, local registered organization dedicated to granting dreams to kids in western Manitoba. Westman Dreams for Kids has one simple goal: to give children who are facing a serious illness, and their families, something to smile about.

Participating businesses include Paterson Grain, Total Eye Care, Lennon Trilogy, Paterson, Patterson, Wyman and Able, Roy Johnston & Co., Advance Auto Body, Action Power, Morningstar Metals, J & G Supply, Forbidden Flavours, Source for Sports, Emco, C & C Rentals, Wheat City Roofing, Northside Mazda, Brandon Business Interiors, KK Penner & Sons, Summit Promotions, Al Rosendaal of Investors Group, Parthenon Pizza, Shoppers Drug Mart, Kuipers Bakery, Overland Waste, Dr. Brian Kiliwnik, Jason Kreiser of the Keystone Centre and Scott Ball of Precision Toyota.

The "Goals for Kids" campaign was established during the 1992-93 campaign and has raised over $225,000 since then. The program is one of the Westman Dreams for Kids major fundraising efforts during the year.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings got back on the winning track Sunday night with a convincing 9-3 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. The game marked the return of Brandon's three 16-year old rookies from the World Under 17 Challenge and Brayden Schenn and Scott Glennie combined with 18-year old Matt Calvert for eleven points in leading the Wheat Kings to the victory, improving their record to 26-13-0-1.

Calvert led the way with two goals and two assists, Glennie had four assists and Schenn scored once and set up two others. Veteran defenceman Theran Yeo scored twice for the Wheat Kings, who moved to within one point of the Eastern Division leading Regina Pats, who dropped a 2-1 overtime decision in Swift Current.
