Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - Ralph Santana went five-for-five and stole two bases to bring his season total to 36, tying the Canaries single-season record in a 7-6 loss against the St. Paul Saints.

The Saints (21-21) got on the board first. Josh Renick led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Renick scored on a single by Adam Olow for a 1-0 lead. Olow came around on a single by Brian Buchanan, and after a half inning the Saints led 2-0.

In the home half of the first, Ralph Santana singled and stole his first base of the night. John Schmitz followed with a triple to bring home Santana. Schmitz scored on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Smith to tie the game, 2-2.

In the second inning, with Pat Scalabrini on first base, Jeremy Frost doubled to the left field corner. Scalabrini attempted to score, but was thrown out on a relay from left fielder Ralph Santana to third baseman Chris Hall to catcher David Hoffman. Despite the great relay the Saints still took back the lead. Chaz Lytle singled to score Frost for a 3-2 lead. After Lytle was caught stealing Josh Renick singled and scored on a double by Derrick White for a 4-2 lead. Adam Olow walked and both White and Olow scored on a single by Brian Buchanan to give the Saints a 6-2 lead.

The Birds got two back in the home half of the second. David Hoffman singled and scored on a triple by Kenta Suzumegano. Santana singled for the second time to plate Suzumegano making it 6-4. Santana then stole his 36 base of the season to tie Matt Dumas' Canaries single-season record set in 1996.

In the top of the seventh, Derrick White hit his second homer of the year for the Saints for a 7-4 lead.

The Canaries would claw back, but fall short. Jake Smith singled and scored on a double by Ralph Santana in the eighth inning. Chad Hermansen hit his 19th homer of the year to pull the Canaries within a run, 7-6. The Canaries were unable to tie the game.

Ivan Hernandez (3-2) picked up the win for the Saints and Aaron Garrison (6-6) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Matt Hammons survived the last 1.1 innings for his 21st save of the season.

After a day off on Sunday, the Canaries will host the Lincoln Saltdogs for the final three home-games of the season. The series begins on Monday night with the Canaries "Baseball Card Giveaway" presented by Alltel Wireless. The first 500 fans will receive the Canaries 2006 Baseball Card Set.
