Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors (19-17) defeated the visiting South Bay Lakers (22-14) tonight, 131-127, halting the team's three game losing streak in February. South Bay went on a 9-2 run to force overtime, but Warriors two-way guard Quinn Cook scored nine of the team's final 13 points to secure the win.
Cook led both teams with 41 points and six assists while shooting 70% from the field (14-20 FG). Forward Terrence Jones, selected to next Sunday's G League International Challenge, had a season-high of 31 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Center Damian Jones, on assignment from Golden State, had a perfect 7-of-7 shooting to finish with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lakers were led by center Thomas Bryant, currently on assignment from Los Angeles, with 28 points on a flashy 13-of-15 from the field with five assists. Scott Machado finished with 15 points and 11 assists and Gary Payton II with 23 points and seven assists. The Lakers had seven players tonight with double digit scoring.
Santa Cruz took a narrow lead in the first quarter, but South Bay roared back in the second by controlling the glass, 18-9, and going on a 10-2 run to end the half with an eight point lead. Before tonight's game, Santa Cruz had a 2-10 record this season when trailing at halftime.
Santa Cruz jump started the third quarter with a 16-6 run, tying the score at 72 within five minutes. Cook dominated the quarter with 17 points and Damian Jones had eight points and four rebounds. The Warriors shot nearly 74 percent from the field and had 40 points in the period, only the third time this season the team reached that plateau.
In the fourth, Bryant's 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting led the Lakers' late charge, with forward Travis Wear's put back layup forcing overtime. In the extra period, despite Terrence Jones picking up two foul calls to leave the game, the Warriors held on to win thanks to Cook and center Trevor Thompson going 7-for-7 from the foul line.
The Warriors will travel to Salt Lake City this Tuesday to play the Stars (tip-off 6:00 p.m.). Terrence Jones will join USA Basketball World Cup Qualifying training camp this Thursday, with games at Kaiser Permanente Arena on February 23 and 26 against Cuba and Puerto Rico, respectively.
