Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (12-4) were boosted by a career night from two-way forward Marcus Derrickson to beat the Erie BayHawks (7-8) 101-100 tonight at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Derrickson notched 29 points and 13 rebounds, including the go-ahead free throws with nine seconds remaining to stave off a late Erie run.
Guard Kendrick Nunn scored 19 points to go with eight rebounds tonight, leading a bench unit that logged 51 points. Warriors guard Jacob Evans III, who was assigned by the Golden State Warriors earlier this afternoon, scored 14 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
The BayHawks were powered by guard John Gillon's game-high 32 points on 11-of-17 from the field (64.7 FG%) to go with five rebounds and eight assists in 42 minutes. Swingman RJ Hunter logged 18 points to go with eight rebounds.
Santa Cruz started the game down 7-0 en route to a 29-19 first quarter deficit, as Erie shot 50.0 percent from the field (10-of-20 FG) and held the Warriors to 32.1 percent shooting (9-of-28 FG) and 0-for-6 from deep. Santa Cruz made a 16-2 run in the second quarter to gain their first lead of the night, with forward Juan Toscano-Anderson leading the team with seven points during the run.
Gillon brought the BayHawks back into the game thanks to 21 second half points, including 8-of-11 shooting from the field. However, Derrickson's 19 points and nine rebounds in the second half, including eight of the team's final ten points in the last three minutes, helped Santa Cruz to an undefeated weekend at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
The Warriors will now travel to Las Vegas, Nevada for the 2018 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase December 19-22 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, as the team plays the Lakeland Magic on Thursday, December 20 at 7:30 p.m. and the Canton Charge on Saturday, December 22 at 12:30 p.m. For information on tickets for all Santa Cruz Warriors home games, visit santacruzbasketball.com or call (831) 713-4400.
