Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
CEDAR PARK, TX - The Santa Cruz Warriors (6-5) outlasted the Austin Spurs (6-6) on Thursday night at H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas, 125-123, to earn their fifth consecutive win.
Guard Kendric Davis led both teams with 33 points and six assists and forward Donovan Williams added 22 points. Two-way center Usman Garuba notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and guard Pat Spencer contributed 15 points and six assists off the bench in the road win.
The Spurs were led by two-way guard David Duke Jr. with 26 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Both two-way forward Dominick Barlow and guard Javante McCoy followed closely with 24 points each, and two-way forward Mamadi Diakite rounded out the scoring effort with 13 points.
The Austin Spurs shot 65% from the field to open the contest, allowing them to pull ahead quickly and close out the frame with a 38-35 lead over the visiting Sea Dubs. Back-to-back buckets from guard Jimmy Whitt early in the second quarter gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, 44-42, with 9:29 remaining in the frame. The game stayed close throughout the remainder of the quarter as both teams continued to trade the lead, but a last-second driving floater from Austin guard Sir'Jabari Rice allowed the Spurs to end the half with a 70-65 advantage.
Back-to-back transition three-pointers from Davis and Garuba kicked off a 13-2 Warriors run that allowed the visitors to reclaim the lead early on in the second half, but the Spurs managed to hold Santa Cruz scoreless for almost three minutes to tie the score at 91 to end the frame. Santa Cruz hit consecutive three-pointers once more - this time at the hands of Davis and forward Jackson Rowe - to gain an early lead in the fourth quarter and managed to endure a 6-0 Spurs run in the final 22 seconds to come away with a hard-fought 125-123 road win.
The Warriors will now travel to Southaven, Mississippi to face the Memphis Hustle on Saturday, January 27 at 5:00 p.m. (PT) in the third contest of a four-game road trip.
