
Santa Cruz Warriors Open Season with a Win against Austin

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors opened the 2013-14 regular season with a 121-102 win over the Austin Toros in front of a sold-out crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena Friday night.
Seth Curry was the high-point man for the Warriors, finishing with an all-time Santa Cruz record 36 points. Curry shot 12-19 from the floor, and had six assists, three rebounds and a steal. Cameron Jones tied the former team regular season record of 31 points, set last season by Travis Leslie on Feb. 1, 2013 against the Texas Legends and Jeremy Tyler on March 30, 2013 against the Los Angeles D-Fenders. The Warriors received additional offensive boosts from Kevin Kotzur, who finished with a double-double (20 points, 11 boards) and Daniel Nwaelele, who scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists.
Six Toros scored in double figures, with both Tre Kelley and Courtney Fells chipping in a team-high 19 points. Former NBA All-Star Josh Howard scored 16 points in 31 minutes, and Eric Dawson finished with a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds). Flip Murray, who played eight seasons in the NBA starting in 2002, added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Austin led the first 14 minutes of the game, and took its biggest lead at 25-17 with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter. The Warriors took the lead early in the second quarter on a Cameron Jones dunk, and they held the advantage for all but 37 seconds the rest of the game. Leading 91-88 with 10:10 to play, the Warriors rattled off a 30-14 run to close the game.
Santa Cruz shot 51.8% from the field and 78.8% from the free throw line, while Austin converted 51.3% from the floor, 50.0% from three and 65.2% from the foul stripe. The Warriors turned the ball over just 14 times to the Toros' 18, and held the edge in steals (10-8) and rebounds (45-36). Austin had the slight advantage in assists (26-23).
