Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (0-2) dropped their two-game series to the Sioux Falls Skyforce (2-0), 123-112, on Friday evening at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Forward Donovan Williams led the Warriors with 23 points and added nine rebounds and five assists, and guard Kendric Davis followed with a double-double, notching 18 points and 10 assists. Two-way center Usman Garuba also closed out the night with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Two-way forward Cole Swider led both teams with 31 points and added seven rebounds. Center Orlando Robinson, on assignment from the Miami Heat, added a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds and guard Alondes Williams contributed 17 points and nine assists to the Skyforce win.
The first quarter featured seven lead changes, until back-to-back three-point shots from forward Gui Santos, on assignment from Golden State, and Davis late in the frame propelled the Sea Dubs into the lead. A putback layup by Garuba with less than one second remaining in the frame gave the Warriors a 42-34 advantage heading into the second quarter. A driving layup and jumper from Williams in consecutive possessions helped Santa Cruz extend their lead by as many as 13 points in the second period. The Skyforce responded with an offensive run including back-to-back layups from guard Jamaree Bouyea and Swider to tie the contest at 62 until a Garuba alley-oop dunk gave the Warriors a 64-62 lead heading into the break.
The Skyforce regained the lead in the third quarter and held a six-point advantage heading into the final frame, 98-92. The Sioux Falls offense extended their lead by 16 points in the fourth quarter, and the Sea Dubs could not overcome the deficit, falling to the Skyforce 123-112.
The Warriors will now travel to Indiana for a two-game series against the Mad Ants on Tuesday, January 2 and Thursday, January 4 at 3 p.m. PT.
