Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD - On just one swing of the bat, the Sanford Mainers (9-10) turned the entire ballgame around, defeating the Newport Gulls (8-11) at Goodall Park, 7-2.

In the 6th inning, with Sanford trailing 2-1, the Mainers loaded the bases with no one away. Ako Thomas (Michigan) and Zach Jancarski (Maryland) singled and Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) walked to set the table for Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade). Mompierre took a 1-0 fastball for a ride over the right center field fence, a no-doubter home run to give the Mainers their first lead of the night and lead they would never lose.

Reminiscent of a night ago, where Newport added runs late into the contest to ensure a win, the Mainers stockpiled insurance runs in the 7th and 8th. In the 7th, the Moose added two after Thomas walked and Jancarski doubled him in. Up 5-2, Hughes doubled in Jancarski to add to the growing lead.

Todd Czinge (Villanova) tripled in in the 8th and only a batter later was knocked in by a Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-2.

Sanford did it on the back of solid pitching, led by Mainers starter Dan Wilson (North Carolina Asheville) who went five-and-two-thirds innings and allowed four hits, two runs (both earned), on one walk and five strikeouts.

The bullpen through three-and-one-third innings allowed just two hits, as Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) escaped a jam and Dalton Brown (Texas Christian) made his first appearance as a Mainer, shutting down the Gulls over the final two innings.

The Gulls were solid early on in grabbing their initial lead. Newport starter Hunter Schryver (Seton Hall) went the first five innings, allowing just one hit, three walks and four strikeouts.

Newport scored in the 1st on a Ben Breazeale (Wake Forest) RBI-single, scoring Troy Brown (St. Johns) from 3rd. In the 2nd Jake Brodt (Santa Clara) doubled to begin the frame and came around on a Mark Powell (Bucknell) sacrifice fly.

The Mainers take to the road before an off-day, as the Moose travel to Keene, New Hampshire to face the 1st place Keene Swamp Bats. Nick Kuzia (Massachusetts Lowell) has the start for Sanford, with coverage beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford 1220 AM and 102.7 FM at 6:15 PM, with first pitch at 6:30 PM.
