Sanford Mainers Shut out Pilgrims

June 15, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers faced the Plymouth Piligrims back on June 8th when they dropped their first road game 4-1. The Pilgrims visited Sanford this time and the Mainers returned the favor as they improve to 2-3 after a 4-0 shut out victory.

It was all about pitching in this game. EJ Ashworth got the start for the Mainers lasting seven innings while giving up three hits and striking out five. Andrew Gallagher followed in relief collecting three strike outs of his own and giving up only two hits in his two innings of work.

After 2.5 innings of scoreless play between the two teams, the Mainers struck first. Pilgrims starter Tyler Honahan retired the first two batters, but ran into trouble. Sam Balzano doubled to deep center and came around to score the game's first run on an RBI single off the bat of Will Cooper.

Just two innings later an almost identical situation happened as Honahan got the first two hitters to retire the same way they did in the third inning, but walked Balzano during the next plate appearance. He then stole second and came around to score on a single just under the dive of center fielder Ryan Stephens. Black advanced to second on the throw and later came around to score on another RBI single by Cooper.

The Mainers added one more run in the eighth when Cole Martin scored on a 4-6-3 double play.

Ashworth improves to 1-1 on the season while Honahan drops to 0-1. Gallagher records his first save on the year.

The Mainers will travel to Vermont tomorrow to take on the Mountaineers in Montpelier. Conor Krauss is expected to make his second start of the season. Game time set for 6:30pm. Catch all the action on the NECBL Broadcast Network or locally in the Sanford area on AM 1220.
