Swamp Bats Secure First Victory, Defeat Brigade 4-3

June 15, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

In front of the largest crowd of the season thus far, the Swamp Bats battled the Saratoga Brigade, defeating the newly added NECBL franchise 4-3.

Keene struck early in this one, getting an RBI single from Nate Irving in the opening frame and then pushing across three more in the bottom of the second, thanks to JP Sportman's bases loaded walk and Eric Gutierrez's two-run double.

For his second straight start, Tanner Delahoy limited the opposition to only one hit. Delahoy lasted to just the fifth inning but held the Brigade scoreless, striking out seven along the way.

Matthew Clancy came on in relief of Delahoy and pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning but ran into trouble in the eight.

After loading the bases and walking in a run with nobody out, Clancy gave way to Wales Toney. Toney walked in a run as well which cut the Swamp Bats lead to 4-2. After getting a pop up for the first out, Toney was able to get a groundball from Craig McConauhey but the double play was erased on an error that allowed the third Brigade run to score. Another groundout allowed the Swamp Bats to record the final out of the inning and move on to the ninth, where Toney threw another scoreless inning to seal the deal and notch his first save of the season.

It took five games but the Swamp Bats finally have their first win of the season after dropping the first four. The team will have the day off on Father's Day but then will be back on the road against North Adams, seeking their first road victory of the young season.
