Newport Gulls News Release

Newport, R.I. "" The Gulls offense exploded for six runs in the seventh inning and Newport survived a late rally to defeat the New Bedford Bay Sox 8-6 at Paul Walsh Field on Saturday, June 15.

First baseman Steve Anderson served as the Gulls offensive catalyst, going 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI as every Gull in the starting lineup with the exception of leadoff man Trace Tam Sing scored a run in the victory.

Newport starting pitcher James Mulry (1-0, 1.54 ERA) delivered seven shutout innings in his second start of the season, giving up just four hits while striking out five to pick up the victory.

The Gulls jumped out to the early lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Anderson, plating second baseman Adrian English. Newport extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when outfielder Ben Roberts scooted home on a wild pitch by New Bedford starter Frank Vilacha.

Newport's offense exploded for six runs on five hits in the seventh inning off a pair of New Bedford relievers, Danny Tyson and Tucker Forbes. Outfielder Timmy Robinson led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when the next batter, Anderson, delivered an RBI triple, his first triple of the season. Catcher Ethan Ferreira reached on an error and outfielder David Graybill doubled before Tyson was lifted in favor of Forbes, who was greeted by back-to-back hits by designated hitter Matt Foley (RBI single) and third baseman Joe Iorio (RBI double). Iorio would later come around to score the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

New Bedford battled back with five runs in the eighth inning off a pair of Gulls relievers and nearly completed an incredible comeback an inning later. All five of the runs were charged to Darin Gillies, who recorded just one out and gave up five hits in his Gulls debut. Taylor Guilbeau came on to record the final two outs of the inning to end the threat and came back out to work the ninth inning.

The Gulls racked up eight runs on a season-high 15 hits in the victory, while New Bedford managed just six runs on nine hits in a losing effort. The Gulls committed three errors, while the Bay Sox made one.

New Bedford pushed across a run and got the tying runs in scoring position before Guilbeau got outfielder Carl Anderson to ground out to first base to end the game and preserve an 8-6 victory.

With the victory, Newport improves to 3-2 overall this season and trail the Laconia Muskrats in the Eastern Division by just one game. New Bedford falls to 2-4 overall with the loss and now sits two and a half games back of the Muskrats in the Eastern Division.

Newport will be back in action at home on Monday, June 17 facing the Laconia Muskrats at Cardines Field. The Gulls will send Milan Mantle (0-1, 0.00 ERA) to the mound for his first start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M.

Since moving to Newport in 2001, the Gulls have captured the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship, the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, an NECBL-record five times, and in 2012 were named the No. 1 summer collegiate team in the country by Perfect Game USA in Perfect Game's Top 50 final rankings, capping a record-breaking season by Newport and marking the first time ever that an NECBL franchise has been ranked No. 1 nationally.

The Gulls, which attract more than 50,000 fans annually to historic Cardines Field in Newport, recruit players from the top college baseball programs in the country, and to date have sent six alumni to Major League Baseball teams, and over 150 players to professional baseball teams ranging from Independent leagues to Triple-A.
