Sanford in must-win situation after dropping game 1

Sanford Mainers News Release


Sanford, ME- The Sanford Mainers (24-18) came in to tonight's game dropping 4 straight to the Keene Swamp Bats (21-21) including all three of the regular season home games at Goodall Park. Nick Poore (Boston College) went 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 runs with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, and was outduelled by Keene starter Matt Blandino. Blandino worked a swift 5 innings with 2 strikeouts giving up 6 hits and 1 run.

The Swamp bats went to the bullpen in the 6th and activated left handed pitcher Matt Clancy to work 2.2 innings not surrendering a hit, walking two and fanning 2. Clancy has pitched in 5 of the six games against the Mainers limiting the Moose to just a .206 batting average allowing 7 runs against, just 2 of them earned. The Mainers did some damage against the starter Blandino, in the bottom of the 5th Matt Pagano drove a leadoff double to left center field and Dan Hetzel followed with a double to bring Pagano home, that proved to be the most dangerous inning for the Mainers bats who left 9 on base with 7 hits and 6 strikeouts.

The Mainers drop the first game 4-to-1 and are behind in the best of 3 series 1-to-0 heading to Keene, New Hampshire and Alumni Field for game two. The Mainers took 2-of-3 from the Swamp Bats at Alumni field this season and look to bounce back with Rich Vrana (Marist) on the mound. As always the road games can be heard on The Legends 1220 AM and 102.3 FM in Sanford with Jeff Bowe, The Voice of the Mainers alongside Joe Fitzhenry the voice of the Swamp Bats.

Corey Raley (Texas Tech) finished 2-for-3, Nick Lovullo (Holy Cross) went 1-for-5, and Dan Hetzel completed a 1-for-3 night with a double and one RBI. Matt Pagano (Marist) went 1-for-2 with a run scored, Kevin Stypulkowski (Univ. of Maine) finished 1-for-3 and Drake Parker batting in the 9th spot of the order reached base once in 3 tries with a single to right field in the 5th inning.

Tyler Barss (URI) completed a scoreless 7th inning with 1 strikeout moving his strikeout total to 18 in 15 innings pitched and Ryan Johnson (Vanderbilt) finished the final 2 innings allowing 2 hits and fanning one batter adding to his 21st strikeouts in 23.1 innings of work this season.

The Mainers move to 26-22 in playoff action and 6-6 against the Keene Swamp Bats in the playoffs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm in Keene as the Moose try to keep their season alive trailing 1-0 in the best of three first round series for the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup!
