Sanford Drops Final Meeting with Upper Valley

July 30, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

HARTFORD, Vt. - While the season might not be over, the chances of Mainers making it to the playoffs got slimmer after falling to Upper Valley, 2-1. The Nighthawks struck first and held on despite rallies from the Moose.

Upper Valley got on the board in the bottom of the second on a double by Johnny Decker (Marist) that scored Luca Trigiani (St. Joe's), 1-0.

The game would remain unchanged for the next five innings thanks to outstanding pitching from both starters.

Matt Adams (Southern Mississippi) went five innings for the Nighthawks, allowed just one hit, and struck out six. In comparison, Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) lasted six innings and notched a pair of strikeouts before leaving in the seventh as traffic built on the bases.

On the first pitch from reliever Brian Craven (William & Mary), Jonathan Hogart (Louisana Tech) poked one into the outfield and brought home Tyler Sorrentino (College of Charleston) to double the lead, 2-0.

In the top of the eighth, the Mainers battled and cut into the lead. A sharply hit grounder from Jake Rainess (Maine) got past the third baseman, Nicholas Wang (Boston College), and allowed Quinn McDaniel (Maine) to score, 2-1.

Sanford got two runners on in the ninth, but the late two-out rally came up short.

The Moose might not be eliminated from the playoffs yet, but a lot of things have to fall in their favor to keep playing into August,

In the meantime, the green and yellow conclude their regular season tomorrow at the league's best, Vermont. Zachary Rodgers (UMass-Lowell) will be on the mound, as Sanford eyes its first win over the Mountaineers.
