Sand Gnat swarm RiverDogs; sweep twin-bill, 4-0, 12-2

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Savannah Sand Gnats pounded out 13 hits in the second game to sweep a twin-bill from the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-0 and 12-2, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victories, Savannah snaps its ten-game losing skid and improves to 22-30 in the second half and 53-67 overall while Charleston falls to 25-27 in the second half and 68-53 overall.

Rogearvin Bernadina belted a grand slam in the Sand Gnats' seven-run seventh inning that highlighted the night's second game. Reggie Fitzpatrick also drove home three runs while the hit parade was led by Edgardo Baez, who had three of Savannah's 13 hits.

Charleston could manage eight hits in the second game, three coming from second baseman Nick Walsh. Charleston scored their two runs in the fifth inning to pull within two, 4-2.

Alex Morales (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Savannah and Thomas Wilson earned his second save. Phil Coke, who went five full innings for Charleston, suffered the loss that dropped his record to 6-10, as he allowed four runs on seven hits. Coke has lost each of his last five starts.

In the first game that started 32 minutes late due to rain, the Sand Gnats shutout the RiverDogs as southpaw Ricardo Morales went six complete inning and scattered two hits. While improving his record to 8-7, Morales struck out three and walked three. Morales has allowed only two runs in 18 innings pitched against the RiverDogs this season, and only two earned runs total in his last six starts (35 innings pitched).

Morales got relief help from Ben Cox, who pitched into a final inning jam by walking three batters but survived when Edwar Gonzalez hit into a double play and Mario Holmann grounded out to second base.

Offensively, Savannah had 11 hits and was led by Brad Ditter's three hits and two apiece by Trey Webb and Seth Bynum.

The Sand Gnats scored one run in the first inning on three consecutive hits on only three pitches, highlighted by Rich Lane's RBI single through the right side that plated Webb, who opened the game with a double down the left field line. Webb moved to third on Bynum's single to left.

Savannah struck for two more in the third on RBI singles by Luke Montz and Ditter, and Bynum had a RBI single in the sixth to make the score 4-0.

The final game of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday at 7:05 p.m. with lefty Chase Wright (8-4) pitching for Charleston while Savannah sends Jim Henderson (7-10) to the hill.
