New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J.
- After Kris Sanchez stroked a game-winning, pinch-hit single in extra innings in game one, Sandy Madera cracked a walk-off home run in extra innings in the nightcap as the New Jersey Jackals swept the Brockton Rox in a doubleheader on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Jackals, who have won nine of their last 10 games, sit a game and a half ahead of the Worcester Tornadoes atop the second half standings with eight games remaining in the regular season.
With Brockton trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh in game one, Rox' shortstop Dominic Ramos lined a Jeff Gogal offering into the trees beyond the left field wall with two runners aboard to give Brockton a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the frame, a Madera sacrifice fly sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Jordan Newton walked with one out and stole second before scoring the game-winning run on the Sanchez single to right as the Jackals triumphed, 5-4.
In the nighcap, the Jackals once again fell behind late. With the score tied 1-1, Brockton's Phillip Cuadrado lifted a two-out solo home run just over the glove of Jackals center fielder Sean Smith with two outs in the top of the eighth to give the Rox a 2-1 lead. In the home half of the eighth, Smith led off with a walk before Madera crushed a Jimmer Kennedy pitch into the batters eye with the Jackals down to their last strike, giving New Jersey a 3-2 win.
The Jackals received quality starting pitching with Isaac Pavlik allowing one run over six innings in game one before Shaun Ellis yielded one run over five frames in game two. Kyle Gunderson (1-0) turned in his fourth consecutive perfect outing since signing with New Jersey to notch the game-one victory while Jared Locke (5-1) allowed one run over three innings of relief to earn the win in the nightcap.
New Jersey starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or less in each of the team's last 13 contests.
After a quick turnaround, the Jackals and Rox will play game three of their four-game series on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey will send right-hander Shaun Ellis (5-3, 4.19 ERA) to the mound while Brockton has yet to name a starter. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
